Early in the design process, working with the clients and the contractor, we made the decision to construct the walls and roof of 12” structural insulated panels (SIPs), placed on an insulated, radiant slab-on-grade. We oriented the house to take advantage of a southern exposure, and with extensive involvement from the clients, worked to secure all building materials locally and regionally. High-performance “H” windows and rooftop-mounted photovoltaic panels are designed to support off-the-grid operation.
